With storms in the Binghamton area, the Regiment-Thunder match was moved into the Vision Field Dome. The delay due to moving everyone inside may have slowed the kick-off but once the opening whistled sounded Tulio Canineu quickly put a pair of goals into the GBFC net in the opening two minutes to set the pace for the match.
The Red Coats claimed a 5-1 win.
Tulio Canineu paced the win with a hat trick. The second-year midfielder tallied a goal in the first, second and 75th minutes. The opening goal was set up by a cross from left back Ryan Landry.
After quickly stealing the ball on the ensuing kick-off, Lucas Godinho fed the ball to Canineu through a crowded goal mouth for the second FPR goal.
After the two quick FPR goals both teams settled into a back and forth match with quick, attacking play. Both teams putting shots on goal but neither able to convert their chances sending the teams to the break with the score unchanged following the opening two minutes’ tallies.
During the halftime break the Regiment switched goalkeepers with Rob McKelvey replacing Scott Rissler.
In the 53rd minute, the Thunder quickly forced McKelvey to make a big save to preserve the 2-0 lead. Cheick Choulibaly unleashed a quick shot from the right corner of the FPR area toward the upper 90 of the back post that McKelvey jousted away.
One minute later with FPR pushing the pace in the attacking third, a Max Flick serve through the area was knocked past the Thunder keeper by his own backline to extend the Pittsburgh lead to 3-0.
In the following five-minute period following the own goal, Anthony Virgara became a threat with multiple attempts on the GBFC goal. In the 57th he converted a Landry cross to score his first goal of season.
Tulio Canineu closed out the FPR scoring in the 75th minute to make it 5-0. A diagonal pass into the GBFC area from Joaquin Franch sprung Canineu 1 v 1 on the GBFC keeper who was unable to prevent the hat trick.
In stoppage time, GBFC drew a foul just outside the Regiment area. The service to the back post was poorly handled by the FPR post defender who headed the ball into the path of Andrew Shell. He obliged in spoiling the clean sheet.
The Regiment improved to 2-0-0 while the Thunder dropped to 0-4-0. The teams will play the rematch on Sunday at 1:30 PM in Slippery Rock University’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
